How to: Voyage Economics Calculator

July 15, 2015

There are a few complimentary calculators available to mcquilling.com registrants including Voyage Economics, Loadable Quantity, Pre-Construction Interest and Acquisition Economics.  The following “How To” blog series will show you how to use each calculator.

The Voyage Economics Calculator is designed to calculate tanker revenues, costs and time charter equivalents for pre-loaded and user-defined voyages.   For this example, we will use the pre-loaded voyage, TD3.

1.  From the pulldown menu – select TD3.  The green cells are input cells and can be changed as needed.  [The WS 100 rate reflects the flat rate for each particular voyage for 2015].

2.  Input cargo quantity, bunker, spot rate and demurrage rate

3.  In the Voyage Description section, the vessel type, ballasting from, loading port, discharge port and ballast miles are pre-defined basis the TD3 route.  These can be changed as needed.

Laden and ballast days are calculated basis the laden and ballast speed.

Port days and Canal days are calculated via user input in the Port, Fuel and Canal Information section.

4.  In the Voyage Costs section, a user is able to change the speed and bunker consumptions.  Subtotal bunkers, subtotal MDO, subtotal fuel costs and subtotal port and canal costs will be calculated based on inputs.

5. In the Port, Fuel and Canal Information section, there are also multiple user input fields.  Port costs are pre-loaded basis 2015 port cost information received from agents.

Bunker price is calculated basis the input at the top of the calculator.

6. In the Freight, Demurrage and Commission section, the bulk of what’s here are output fields based on previous inputs.  Input other revenue and commission.

7.  Click Calculate.  Net voyage revenue is provided in the results field as well as the Time Charter Equivalent.  A breakdown of these results can be found in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

7.  At the top of the page, click the printer icon to obtain a copy of the calculation.  This is useful to bring to a meeting, while on the phone with other market participants or for a quick-desk reference for personal use.

8.  Click the reset button at the bottom of the screen to reset the fields and start over.
